Artist's Comments

"My grandmother once told me a story that her grandmother told to her...
Of how, as a small child, she became lost in the Other World through an accident:
The land of youkai and spirits, the place where humans are forbidden to go."

"Fortunately she came into the care of the chieftan of the 'jinbu',
creatures who travelled the Human World by night rooting out evil things.
So it was that Ojii-Kurai, or 'Old Man Darkness'
and his clan returned her to the Human World."

"She died knowing no one would believe her, but she was certain it was not a dream.
She was never again afraid of darkness."

Beautifully done! I love the way the diamond pattern recurrs in the...hair, I guess you'd call it. And the expressions are so perfect!

A world without art? That is impossible.

Hot damn, you're good Andrea. Honestly, that's a piece of art if I've ever seen one. The level of detail is almost insane and yet it has a very unified feeling. Love it. +fav.

The coloring is so incredibly exquisite, I can barely stand it. :jawdrop: I simply adore the Old Man Darkness, his detail and kindly, warm face is just so comforting, and to see such a creature with the little girl.. this picture is just magical. Your technique for the pillow and the scales on the tail is incredible - I hope to render something like that one day :D

on the scale of worlds, to say nothing of stars and galaxies, humans are inconsequential. a thin film of life, on an obscure and solitary lump of rock and metal.

Yay it's done! Absolutely spectacular Andrea :D The design of everything is so well done, from the patterns on the girl's kimono to that lovely wall scroll in the back. And Ojii-Kurai looks so sagely! Well done!

Oh, this is so gorgeous. The colored pencil and water color blend together so smoothly it's wonderful. THe things that scream Japan to me the most are the wall paintings and scripts, and then the shinto paper dangling from his protrusions. Absolutely fantastic.
